The start of a new Starlight Reserve
Sustainable Development, Heritage and Starlight
The Costiera Amalfitana, inscribed on the World Heritage List in 1997, besides proposing itself as a Biosphere Reserve candidate, has also started the procedure to become a Starlight Reserve, looking at environmental eco-sustainability from the point of view of illumination. The Amalfi coast is an area of great physical beauty and natural diversity. It has been intensively settled by human communities since the early Middle Ages. The new vision of future of the Costiera includes the recovery of its night sky, undertaking a strategy linked to energy sustainability. It would promote an intelligent lighting, as a complement to the preservation of its extraordinary landscape, natural and cultural heritage. The municipalities of the Costiera Amalfitana were the first in Europe to sign the Covenant of Mayors, which is a commitment by signatory towns and cities to go beyond the objectives of EU energy policy in terms of reduction in CO2 emissions through enhanced energy efficiency and cleaner energy production and use.
A new observatory for the Costiera Amalfitana StarLight Reserve. Hundreds of people below the stars.
Since June 27th last also the Costiera Amalfitana has its own observatory. It was a magic night when the first astronomical observatory in the area was inaugurated. This event, included in the Starlight Initiative and organised by the associazione Costiera amalfitana Biosphere Reserve (Acar.bio), and the Neil Armstrong Astronomical Centre (C.A.N.A), drawn the interest of hundreds of people coming not only from the Costiera but from the whole Campania region.
