El Seminario y encuentro internacional de expertos “Reservas Starlight y Patrimonio Mundial: Valores Científicos, Culturales y Medioambientales” se desarrolló gracias al compromiso del Cabildo de Fuerteventura, y se organizó en cooperación con el Centro de Patrimonio Mundial de la UNESCO, el Instituto de Astrofísica de Canarias (IAC) y la Unión Astronómica Internacional (UAI).

La Conferencia forma parte del ciclo “Astronomía y Patrimonio Mundial: a través del tiempo y de los continentes”, como parte de las actividades programadas por la UNESCO y el Centro del Patrimonio Mundial en el contexto de la Iniciativa “Astronomía y Patrimonio Mundial”, promovido con ocasión del Año Internacional de la Astronomía, AIA2009..

Uno de los objetivos de este evento ha sido el celebrar la Primera reunión del Grupo de Trabajo Reservas Starlight. El objetivo general es analizar los criterios de identificación y categorías específicas relativas a los espacios naturales, paisajes del cielo nocturno y sitios excepcionales para la observación astronómica, que como Reservas Starlight (Reservas de la Luz de las Estrellas) puedan ser nominados para las candidaturas en la Lista del Patrimonio Mundial.
