The Gran Telescopio CANARIAS (GTC)
saw its "first light" at the Roque de los Muchachos Observatory (ORM) the night of
July 13th, 2007 in the presence of HRH The Prince of Asturias, who showed his
support to the Starlight initiative.

Island Council, Jos� Luis Perestelo Rodr�guez hands the Starlight commemorative medal to
HRH The Prince of Asturias (President of Honour of the Starlight Conference) in the
presence of the President of the Canary Islands Government, Paulino Rivero and of the
Spanish Minister of Education and Science, Mercedes Cabrera Calvo-Sotelo.

HRH The Prince of Asturias met the promoters of the Starlight initiative, Prof.
Francisco S�nchez (Director of the Canary Islands Institute of Astrophysics - IAC),
Antonio San Blas (Manager of the La Palma Biospere Reserve), Luis Mart�nez (IAC) and
Cipriano Mar�n, (in the photograph), Coordinator of the Initiative.
